The What to Wear Conundrum

From finding the perfect dress to picking out wedding china, planning your big day can feel like a dizzying whirlwind. One big decision on a bride’s mind around the eight to six month mark is “What in the world do I wear for our Engagement photos?!”

Whether you’re keeping it casual or playing dress up, here are some basic guidelines to help you capture that “enchanted love” feel as opposed to the highly feared “cheesy Christmas card” look.

STYLE:

  • Formal or casual, solid colors are your friend. Some photographers would say avoid overdoing busy patterns, plaids, florals, or too much black or white, but to us that’s not necessarily true. • Don’t go overboard with coordinating clothing palettes to the point of looking matchy-matchy. (The dreaded cheesy Christmas card)
  • If you’re uncertain about bold colors, pick a neutral and a few color tones you’re already using for the wedding and that flatter you both.
  • Wear an outfit that feels like you. What is your go-to look? Think favorite dress, shoes, sweater, something your best friend would say “That’s so you!” The more comfortable you are the more relaxed and natural the pictures will look.
  • Consider an outfit change or two to switch up the looks and have options to choose from in case the one you were going for doesn’t come out quite like you had in mind. This is a must for couples considering a creative-themed shoot. Pack classic options to take a few timeless traditional shots as well.

THE DETAILS:

  • Accessories: Think minimalist or be flashy if thats who you are! Just be you and ROCK IT!
  • Get your Nails Did: Nothing ruins those close up ring shots like an un-manicured hand. For that extra bling, consider getting the ring professionally cleaned first!

NOT TO WEAR:

  • Fluorescent Colors: (such as bright orange, yellow, green) tend to have an effect on the skin and you could end up looking a little sickly. If the shirt is too bright, it often also changes the skin tone of the person standing next to them.
  • Major look changes: You want the photos to reflect who you really are, and you want to be comfortable in your own skin.
  • Dudes: It’s usually better to wear a belt if you are wearing a nice button-up shirt. Sometimes, if untucked shirts are too big or wide, they tend to make you look “boxy.” Fitted shirts and jackets look much better than wide oversized ones.
