A New York City Love Story | Ben & Randi’s Engagement Shoot

“Don’t you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address.”

Joe Fox knew what he was talking about. That line from one of the best-loved movies in cinematic history perfectly describes the reason the #pure7fam headed to the Big Apple last fall for an adventure-filled engagement shoot with Ben and Randi.

Randi is the first to admit that she didn’t want to do engagement photos, initially. She didn’t even want to date Ben, initially. Luckily, everyone’s persistence paid off. He got the girl and, after assuring her that we really do love to travel, so did we. We packed our gear and met them in the city where they fell in love.

From the corner bistro where they had their first date to the newsstand below their apartment and the flower shop down the street, we spent a whirlwind week in New York capturing all the places that brought their story to life – a story that almost wasn’t written, thanks to the infamous Friend Zone.

Why We Love Seaside Engagement Photos | Hannah & Sam

We love working on 30A. There are so many pretty beach communities that line the Gulf of Mexico and if you ask us, they are all on 30A. Lately Seaside seems to stand out as a top pick for engagement photos. The more we shoot there, the more we love it so today we’re using Hannah and Sam’s photos to talk about why we love Seaside engagement photos.

First there’s the obvious reason. Seaside has it all! We can choose the beach, the lush green trees that are native to Northwest Florida, or beautiful buildings that make up Seaside to serve as our backdrop.  Having so many different environments to work with gives couples a chance to show a different side of their personality. This is important because not everyone thrives or feels comfortable in the same settings.

Second, different backgrounds means different clothing. Just like certain environments can make you feel more or less comfortable; different colors or outfits do the same thing. You’ll notice in some of the photos Hannah chose to wear a dress. The way a woman feels in a dress is very different than being in a comfy sweater and jeans. The same thing goes for Sam. Bright colors attract different energy. We love Seaside for giving us easy excuses to diversify our engagement photos.

The third reason we love taking engagement photos in Seaside is because we can break up the session and get to know our clients as we move from place to place. Not everyone gets settled and comfortable being in front of the camera right way. Being able to explore Seaside with our couples helps inspire our work and makes each engagement session unique. It also encourages us to escape anywhere that doesn’t feel just right.

How To Get Romantic Engagement Photos | Colton & Mary in Rosemary Beach

If Mary Poppins had ever chosen to take a beach vacation it most certainly would’ve been to Rosemary Beach, Florida. It’s practically perfect in every way. That’s why it was the perfect place for Colton and Mary’s engagement photos. While getting engagement photos is probably a given, we want to share how to get romantic engagement photos like theirs.

  1. Choose a Professional. Unless you’re a model, it’s not everyday you get to be the subject of a photoshoot. So being photographed by a professional is a special thing. Special just like your engagement and the love that got you there. If you treat it like it’s special than the experience will be special and the photos will turn out so much better because everybody involved had a little more invested in it.
  2. Location. Location. Location. Whether it’s walking on the beach or somewhere in a city, pick a spot that is special and representative of you as a couple. It personalizes the entire experience and invites you to be yourselves. Recently, we traveled to meet a couple in NYC for their engagement photos because that’s where they met and fell in love. While they don’t live there anymore, New York is part of their story.  We saw a completely different side of their love in the city which is another testament to why location can make a difference. Pick a place that’s not just picture perfect but one that’s part of your love.
  3. Be yourself. It’s cliche but true that “everyone else is taken.” We bring this up because it’s really easy to get caught up in what other people have done before you. Everyone wants to give you advice. Sure, it’s all probably great advice but we’ve learned over the years that advice usually comes from experience. Don’t let what other people wanted for themselves dictate who you are or what you want. Be yourself and everything else will romantically fall into place.
  4. Coordinate Don’t Compromise.  Nothing is worse than having a big moment ruined by being told to wear something you hate. As you prepare for your engagement photos, pick outfits that look good together but still express who you are. Remember, you fell in love with your fiance for a reason. If it wasn’t for their fashion sense then help them out but don’t pull them so far from who they are they get uncomfortable. You can’t afford to compromise anyone being uncomfortable with how they’ll look on camera.
  5. Have Fun. There is a lot of stress that comes with planning a wedding and we’re determined to make sure getting engagement photos isn’t one of them. As you can see in Mary and Colton’s engagement photos, they look like they’re having fun because they are. They were able to do the first four things on this list which gave them the freedom and permission to experience this last one.

Engagement Session Seaside Style | Victoria & Spencer

For most people, getting engaged is the official beginning of happily ever after. Sure you can love someone with all your heart and dream about spending your days together but until it’s official there’s always an element of “the unknown” that makes it seem like dream. When we got the call to shoot an engagement session because Spencer turned Victoria’s dream into a reality we were ecstatic. As we talked with them it became clear we were going to do an engagement session Seaside style.

As you can see in the pictures, Seaside is one of the best places you could possible choose to take your engagement photos. There are so many fun and beautiful places to capture the couple’s love and excitement as they take there first steps to building a life together. Mixing fun with beauty never fails to deliver the most captivating collections of photos. Be it engagement photos, wedding photos or even family beach photos, the combination is truly empowering.

Just look at Victoria and Spencer in every shot. Seaside effortlessly pulls out their personalities. We see so many sides to the two of them as a couple and as two wonderful individuals. It’s hard to say which location was our favorite because everywhere we went brought out a different and equally lovely dynamic.

From the bikes to the beach, Victoria and Spencer did a great job being true to themselves. Their clothing choices were flawless. Always coordinating but in the most spectacularly subtle way. Not to mention, each outfit paired with each location to perfection. With their few simple changes we were able to get several completely different sides of Victoria and Spencer all linked together by their love for one another.

If you’ve got engagement photos or even family photos coming up. This is a great engagement session to put on Pinterest so you can come back and take notes.

Natalie + Parker’s Engagement Photography Session | Seaside Florida

Though glaringly obvious at first glance, Natalie and Parker are beautiful people.  But there’s really something special about this awesome couple – they’re just as beautiful inside as they are on the outside.  From our first conversation with Natalie, we knew right away we’d all become fast friends – and that we did!

Natalie and Parker were planning a Seaside wedding so Ryan decided to mix it up a bit and head over to Draper Lake for the start of their engagement Photography session.  Draper Lake is one of 30A’s many hidden gems, as its coastal dune lake surrounded by oak and pine trees provides a slight change of scenery from our equally as gorgeous white-sand beaches.   But no 30A engagement session would be complete without a trip to the beach, so they headed to nearby Ed Walline Beach to take advantage of the perfect mix of gorgeous light + gorgeous people, resulting in gorgeous-gorgeous engagement photos!   Alan also joined them to capture one of his signature Coalesce Sessions – and we love this highlights reel!  Stay tuned for the full film in which Natalie and Parker were interviewed about each other – such a fun session and truly captures just how in love and awesome this couple really is!

Jamie + Ryan | St. Augustine Engagement: Wedding Photographers

Nothing is more awesome than when one of our former bridesmaids (of weddings you can see here & here) knows she has to have Pure 7 as her wedding photographers.  So when Jamie shared the news of her upcoming Watercolor wedding, we couldn’t have been more thrilled to be asked to be a part of her and Ryan’s day.  First things first though: Jamie & Ryan needed some great engagement photos!

Because our bride and groom live in Jacksonville, Ryan decided to venture to their neck of the woods for their engagement session, which took place in neighboring St. Augustine.  Ryan’s actually been itching to get back there ever since the St. Augustine wedding he photographed in 2009.  So, being the opportunist that he is, he loaded up his camera, and headed that way for a fun engagement session – and a golf weekend with the guys.  Since Jamie works for the PGA Tour in Ponte Vedra, she filled (our) Ryan in on all the great courses in the area.

St. Augustine engagement photos with two sweet, fun people in love + some terrific tee time left Ryan feeling refreshed, inspired and so excited for their Watercolor wedding next year!
