Whether you’re gathering the family together for family portraits or planning a wedding and want magical photos that share your love story, it is incredibly important to find the right photographer for the job. You want someone to tell your story and capture those moments and memories most important to you.
Of course, you know all this. The question is…how do you do go about finding your perfect photographer? Simple. Know what you want and research!
This doesn’t mean checking online for the top photographer in your area and picking the first one that pops up on your Google search. While a photographer may be considered the best in your area according to your internet results, they may not be the right fit for you depending on YOU and your style.
So what does this mean for you? It means getting into the nitty gritty – understanding your personality and your needs, and finding the photographer to match. To do this, you need to ask yourself questions that will help you discover your (or your family’s or spouse’s) needs. For example, if you’re a bride looking for a wedding photographer, these questions might include:
- Do I usually feel awkward in photos?
- Do I need a photographer who is assertive in giving directions, or someone more laid-back?
- Will my wedding be formal and traditional, or more low-key and casual?
- What type of color, lighting, etc., do I like best?
Obviously, this is not an all-encompassing list. As you delve into your photography needs, you may discover more detailed questions that will help you find your ideal photographer.
Once you know the answers to these questions, and can invariably share what you’re looking for in a photographer, you can begin your research to find the photographer that will fill those needs. From searching online to asking friends and family for references, there are many resources to help you…and now that you have an idea in your head of what you are looking for, it will be easy to determine whether or not a photographer fits your style. As a family and wedding photographer on 30A, my approach is laid back, and I like to witness the day unfold and capture the small, special, and unique moments. While this approach might work for some, it may not work for others.
After you’ve found a photographer whose style you like, and you think they might be “the one”, you’re almost there! Before you book your shoot, make sure to talk to them on the phone, as this is a good way to see if their personality is a good fit with your own. Your interactions with the photographer will affect your entire day, so it is important to make sure your personalities mesh. This way you can be yourself and feel at ease during the shoot, thus resulting in unique, genuine photos that match your style.
While this may be little more work than a simple search on Google, it will most certainly be worth it in the end…especially when you see those picture-perfect photos!
