Annual family portrait sessions are a wonderful way to preserve cherished memories for years to come. When selecting outfits, remember that your clothing should enhance your look, not detract from it. To achieve this, we recommend sticking to three to four colors at most. This way, you can easily coordinate with everyone while still allowing individual style to shine through. A simple way to choose a color palette is to start with the outfit of one family member with the most patterns and build from there. Limiting patterns to one or two people is also advisable, especially if you’re not confident in your styling skills.

When selecting colors, consider the environment where you plan to display your family portraits. If your home decor features soft, muted tones, you may want to choose outfits in the same style. On the other hand, if your decor features cooler tones, select clothing that complements them.

Avoid trendy patterns and logos, as they can date your photos and make them look less timeless. Instead, add depth and texture to your outfits with accessories such as belts, scarves, jackets, or sweaters. Indirect matching is another styling tip that we love. If one family member is wearing a yellow floral dress, another family member could wear a soft yellow button down shirt. This creates a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy.

Most importantly, choose clothing that you feel comfortable in. Discomfort shows in photos, so opt for items that you’re familiar with, fit well, and enjoy wearing.
