The fall and winter months are a great time to capture the beauty of your family with a professional portrait session. With the changing of the seasons comes a unique opportunity to capture the warmth and love of your family in a beautiful setting. Whether you’re looking for a traditional portrait session or something more creative, there are plenty of options to choose from.

This week, along with a feature of some of our recent fall family portraits, we thought we’d share a few of our favorite tips for planning your perfect fall or winter family portrait session!  Ryan has limited winter sessions available – inquire today to get your winter family portraits scheduled.

Choose the Right Location

When it comes to family portraits, location is key. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of location options for 30A family photographers!  You want to choose a place that will reflect the personalities of your family and create a beautiful backdrop for the photos. We love locations that have a variety of colors and textures, such as a park with trees and foliage, a beach with sand and waves, or a cityscape with buildings and monuments. If you’re looking for something more creative, consider a studio or a unique outdoor location.

Choose the Right Outfits

When it comes to family portraits, the right outfits can make all the difference. You want to choose clothing that will flatter everyone in the family and create a cohesive look. Choose colors that will complement the location and the season. For fall and winter, we see families consider warm colors like red, orange, and yellow.  Have no idea where to start?  No worries – after your portrait planning session, we’ll send you our What to Wear guide chocked full of tips & tricks for styling the whole crew.

Create a Fun Atmosphere

The key to a successful family portrait session is to create a fun atmosphere. Let your family be themselves and have fun with the session. Do what you can to encourage everyone to be comfortable. This will create a relaxed and natural atmosphere that will be reflected in the portraits for years to come!

Capture Special Moments

Family portraits are a great way to capture special moments and memories. Ryan loves to capture candid shots of your family interacting and laughing together. It’s often the most natural, candid photos that are our family favorites.

As you can see from above, fall and winter are great times to capture the beauty of your family with a professional portrait session. With the right location, outfits, and atmosphere, you can create a beautiful experience for the whole family that will live on through family heirlooms for years to come.
